Edinburgh Academy Junior School’s Year of Support for Fresh Start

Category Uncategorised

We are approaching the school summer holidays and are coming to the end of an amazing year of support for Fresh Start from the Edinburgh Academy Junior School.

The school’s Charity Committee, made up of representatives from all year groups, chose Fresh Start to be the chosen charity for the year and have been instrumental in encouraging their classmates to get involved with supporting Fresh Start.

The Committee visited the warehouse to learn about Fresh Start and they also made lots of Starter Packs up for us too! They then made posters, took part in assemblies and organised their classes to collect items for our Starter Packs, holding five huge collections over the course of the year. We even received food from their harvest appeal.

A special collection took place in December, with the children from the committee wanting to do something that would help Fresh Start’s clients at Christmas time. They decided to collect Christmas food, decorations and toiletries – this included a staggering 46 boxes of mince pies! The clients receiving the festive packs were delighted – one person said “they really went out of their way to make it the best possible Christmas”. This was only possible due to the Edinburgh Academy’s generosity.

On top of the goods collections we also benefited from fundraising, with money from the Dean Dance being donated, and a special collection from the Primary 2 classes at the school too. The children in Primary 2 were asked not to eat breakfast before they came to school in order to experience what some people living in poverty go through, and then held a fundraising breakfast together for Fresh Start.

We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of the school over the course of the year, and it has been a privilege to work with the children from the Charity Committee. Here is the Committee on the day of the final collection, alongside teacher Alison Hogg who has organised everything over the course of the year. Thank you so much to the school, the children and their families for getting behind Fresh Start and giving so much. We hope too that it has given the children involved a good insight as to the issues people who have experienced homelessness face.
