Cooking Class Recipe - Macaroni Cheese


Ingredients:





  • 50g macaroni - £0.07




  • Approximately ½ pint milk - £0.25




  • 25g flour - £0.01




  • 25g margarine/butter - £0.04




  • 100g grated strong cheddar cheese - £0.54




  • salt and pepper to taste




Total cost: £0.91


How to make:


1. Half fill a saucepan with water, add ½ teaspoon of salt and bring to the boil, add the macaroni and cook for 10 minutes or as directed on the packet


2. Melt the margarine/butter in a small pan, add the flour and stir over a medium heat for a few minutes. Add the milk gradually stirring all the time. When the mixture comes to the boil, turn the heat down and simmer for two minutes


3. Add two thirds of the cheese and a small pinch of salt and pepper to the sauce, return to the heat to allow the cheese to melt


4. Turn the grill on


5. Drain the macaroni through a sieve and add to the sauce


6. Pour into an ovenproof dish, cover with the remaining cheese and brown under the grill


Serve with a green vegetable and/or salad.


For a change, you can add a chopped hard-boiled egg to the sauce at the same time as the macaroni.
